Gum recession: when might a gum graft be recommended?
An exposed root may lead someone to seek a consultation because of sensitivity or the appearance of their smile. But recommending a gum graft requires assessing the cause of recession and the condition of the tissues around the tooth.
What is gum recession?
Gum recession occurs when the gum margin moves and exposes part of the tooth root. The tooth may appear longer. This change deserves assessment even when there is no pain.
Diagnosis involves more than the amount of visible root. Gum health and the characteristics of the area need to be examined to understand the situation and discuss follow-up.
What is a gum graft for?
In selected cases, a graft can increase gum tissue thickness and cover exposed roots. The goal is defined for each area: reinforcing the tissues and seeking root coverage are not necessarily the same thing.
The material and technique depend on planning. One option is to use the patient’s own tissue, usually taken from the palate. The choice should be explained during the consultation, including care of the treated area and, when applicable, the donor site.
Can every root be fully covered?
No. Anatomy and the condition of the tissues around the tooth influence the potential for root coverage. Realistic expectations are an essential part of planning.
Before deciding, ask what the graft is intended to achieve in your case and which limitations have been identified. A photograph of another patient’s result does not guarantee the same result for you.
Does every case of recession need surgery?
The presence of recession does not automatically mean surgery is needed. Assessment helps guide the decision between monitoring and treatment, considering the local condition and the patient’s goals.
The first step is therefore not to choose a type of graft. It is to understand the situation, discuss alternatives and organize care for gum health.
What is recovery like?
The procedure and care are individualized. Hygiene, diet and follow-up visits should follow the team’s instructions. When there is a donor site, that area is also part of follow-up.
There is no single timeline that applies to every case. Ask what to expect at different stages of healing and how to contact the team if you have a concern.
