Chin and jaw angle implants: what is the difference?

The chin and jaw angle contribute to facial contour, but they occupy different areas. Understanding this difference helps you discuss the purpose of a facial implant and the limits of the procedure.

What is a chin implant?

A chin implant is a device used to modify the projection or contour of the chin. Planning considers the profile and the relationship between this area and the rest of the face.

During the consultation, explain whether your concern involves the profile view, chin shape or overall balance. A photograph may help describe the concern, but it does not determine suitability or implant size on its own.

What about a jaw angle implant?

A jaw angle implant acts on the posterior region of the jaw. Its purpose may be to increase volume or definition in that area, depending on facial structure and planning.

It is not a larger version of a chin implant: it is designed for a different area. A desired change in the chin and a desired change in the jaw angle need to be assessed separately and together in relation to facial proportions.

How is size chosen?

The choice should not start with a size found online. Assessment considers tissues, facial proportions, asymmetries and the patient’s expectations.

Before discussing the implant, it is useful to define the desired change and understand what is possible. More volume does not, by itself, mean a more balanced result.

Does an implant correct the bite?

No. A chin implant does not reposition the bones to correct the bite. When the concern involves the relationship between the jaws, other approaches may need to be discussed.

This distinction avoids confusing a contour change with correction of a functional or skeletal problem. Clinical examination and the necessary records guide that conversation.

What risks and care should be discussed?

Infection, implant displacement and a possible need for revision are among the points to discuss before the procedure. Assessment should cover alternatives, limitations and recovery as well as suitability.

Care and follow-up vary according to the case. Ask how follow-up visits will work, which instructions you will need to follow and what changes may be expected during recovery. Result photographs do not replace this discussion.
